About IsItDown

Last updated: 2026-10-11

IsItDown is a free website status checker. When a page will not load and you are not sure whether the problem is the site or your connection, this tool gives you a fast, practical answer: can our servers reach that site right now, and how?

Why a server-side check

A check run inside your own browser can be wrong in both directions: browsers block some responses by design (opaque “no-cors” results), and a site that is fine for everyone else can look broken from one network. So IsItDown runs the check from its own backend on a neutral vantage point. That separates a real outage from a local problem and gives you a second opinion you can share:

  • One verdict, everyone the same. A shared status link shows the same server-side result to every visitor, so “is it down for you too?” has a concrete answer.
  • Details, not just up/down. The verdict includes the HTTP status, the response time, and which step failed (DNS, connection, TLS or timeout) when the site is down.
  • History. The backend keeps the last few checks for each domain in memory, so the page can show a short history chart and the last time the site was down.

What the check does

When a status page loads, this site’s backend attempts an HTTPS connection to the address with an 8 second timeout. If the server answers — with any HTTP status, even an error page — the site is marked up and we show the status code and the round-trip time. If the connection fails — the domain does not resolve, the connection times out, or the TLS handshake breaks — the site is marked down and the verdict names the failing step.

What the check does not do

  • It does not run a full crawl or load the whole page.
  • It does not monitor a site continuously — results are computed on demand and kept in memory only, resetting on every deploy.
  • It refuses private and local addresses (your router, 127.0.0.1, intranet names) so it cannot be used to probe your network.
  • It checks from a single vantage point, so a region-specific problem that does not affect our servers will not show up.

Who is behind this site

IsItDown is part of a small collection of free, single-purpose web tools. The sites are built as plain, fast pages that work on phones and desktops alike, and they are kept running with the help of third-party advertising. You can read exactly how advertising and data handling work on our Privacy Policy.
